I haven’t posted an update or made any changes to my Motif account for a while but I wanted to take a look at how it’s doing. I originally posted my Motif Review back in the middle of last year. If you haven’t checked out Motif yet then I’d recommend taking a look. You basically get to purchase a basket of 30 stocks for one commission fee.
My first purchase was to buy every stock in the Dow 30 and I weighted them accordingly.
My second purchase and third purchase went in heavy on AT&T since I basically wanted to add more telecom exposure. What this did was boost the yield of my Motif and put a heavier weight on AT&T.
Here’s a look at the mix of that portfolio now:
You will notice a 31st company now in the portfolio which was spun off from Dupont.
The total yield of this portfolio is 4.08%. 57.5% of this portfolio is AT&T. The account is up 5.3% since inception. This is slightly lower than the S&P 500 over that time due to AT&T only being up about 1%. However, this does not account for the dividends. I’ve received dividend payments like clockwork each and every month.
I’ve received a total of $278.13 in dividend since January in this account. Here’s a look at just the last couple of months.
I collected 26 different dividend payments, including a large $104 payment from AT&T, plus received some shares of a new company that spun off from Dupont.
Buying an entire Motif of 30 stocks is $9.95 or rebalancing your entire Motif but buying only one company in the Motif is $4.95 like when I just added some AT&T shares.
So far I’m pretty happy with the account and plan to add another purchase soon. Maybe I’ll add some CVX or CAT or another position that’s been taking a beating.
For a new investor, seeing all of these different dividend payments is great motivation. I like to see them myself even if they are small, I know they will continually grow larger. This account is sort of an experiment but I plan to have the entire account be around 5% of my entire portfolio. I am also going to explore a basket of speculative biotech companies. I feel much better having a basket of 30 than to just put all my money on one position.
Anyone else use Motif?
